At Fall for the Books, George Mason U, October 11, 2018

Juan Thompson (Stories I Tell Myself) and Tim Denevi (Freak Kingdom) with me (Keep This Quiet! memoir series) at George Mason University for the "Fall for the Books" fest October 11. With us via Skype was Bill McKeen (Outlaw Journalist). For an hour and a half, we gave views on "Writing about Hunter S. Thompson." What a memorable blast - on-stage" and off. We had such fun hanging together and also sharing time, talking about our very different writing experiences - Juan being Hunte...

More on Milton Klonsky – Commentary Magazine, etc.

To read my book that features a motherload of Milton Klonsky gems - wisdom and dry wit - click here for Keep THIS Quiet Too! More Adventures with Hunter Thompson, Milton Klonsky, Jan Mensaert. Here are some links to further the introduction to Milton Klonsky.  Commentary has preserved his articles in their magazine, including (under Culture and Civilization) "The New Yorker 25th Anniversary Album"; that one is on cartoons and mass culture in the era before social media. The web post "The B...

The Ghosts of Virginia and Hunter S. Thompson roam the city library’s aisles

Gonzo Fest is THIS WEEKEND. I am excited to be in a literary panel, along with Bill McKeen, Ron Whitehead, Juan Thompson, and Rory Feehan -  moderated  by Michael Lindenberger, a journalist on the editorial board of the Dallas Morning News. It will take place in the Louisville library Saturday the 15th at 4:30. Below - anticipating that event -  is an excerpt of an article by Ron Whitehead in Leo Weekly: Fiction is a bridge to the truth that journalism can’t reach. Facts are lies when the...

Maurice Girodias – A bit of Adventure – the Sixties

There was a time when books were regularly censored - not just in Communist countries. Right here in the U.S. Living in Greenwich Village, I made a friend of my next-door neighbor, and she in turn used to take trips to Europe in the pay of Maurice Girodias, a publisher notorious for bringing out banned books. Above is an interesting bit of memorabilia from my  Greenwich Village days that I turned up just an hour or two ago in my basement archives. The short excerpt below describes some of Mauric...

The Balancing Act of Me

Elizabeth Hein's novel How to Climb the Eiffel Tower kept me up to 3 a.m. the other night. In it a first-hand narrator wittily and with vulnerability describes her successful battle with cancer as a young career woman. I wouldn't have expected to be swept up in the topic, but she has a deft style and kept me reading and turning pages. Elizabeth has honored me by inviting me to contribute a Guest Blog, which you can read here. I took the occasion to write about relationships in the context of the...

Hunting for Thompson – HST BOOKS

Many thanks to Marty Flynn, owner of HST Books, who has added this post. I have reproduced the beginning below. But I am sure you will want to click "Keep Reading" at the end. First Marty introduces my text: Margaret Harrell first met Hunter when she was working on copy editing his first published book Hell’s Angels. They maintained a friendship for years after. She is an accomplished author herself, In-particularly of the Keep This Quiet series where Hunter gets a significant mention. For any ...

About the Series

The series title comes from the envelope above, which Hunter sent me (his copy editor for Hell's Angels) upon learning what I looked like. And how young I was. Keep This Quiet! comes replete with letters and other materials from Hunter - not available elsewhere - about the Hell's Angels period. It also  corrects some widely touted anecdotes. I was not only Hunter's copyeditor/Assistant Editor on Hell's Angels but also a friend. What is KTQ! about??? Kirkus Reviews says Harrell’s memoir ...
